I believe this man (Thomas Tarran) was the younger brother of the first of my relatives (of the Tarran line, on my father's side) to emigrate to Australia from the UK. The relative who emigrated was William Francis Tarran (b. 1834). Thomas Tarran (b. 1851), who may be his younger brother, is listed as being on the gravestone image, along with Thomas' daughter Maisie. Their father was also called William Francis Tarran. I'm hoping that text on the gravestone might confirm if my ancestor and Thomas Tarran are indeed brothers, with the same parents. Thomas was a sculptor, and both his (potential) brother and father were stonemasons, as was another younger brother.
